It is always pleasant to stumble across a good movie, and on TV nonetheless. The start of the film grabbed my attention; it was a video-logue of someone’s wedding with interviews of friends and families. Then we see the couple, Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich), in their yellow Jeep driving on their honeymoon trip talking about their wedding, families, and stuff. They are on the beautiful island of Hawaii, and the photography can’t be more amazing with this film, it’s stunningly beautiful with vibrant colours.
This is not a sun and beach honeymoon, instead the couple are taking a hiking expedition on the remote island of Kauai. Along the way, they hear of another newlywed couple were brutally murdered on another island, and that makes them nervous and paranoid. They think the hitch-hikers, Cleo(Marley Shelton) and Kale(Chris Hemsworth) are prime suspects, whom they met while driving on that island on way to get their hiking license. They are described as the duo in Natural Born Killer (1994). While on Kauai, they meet Nick(Timothy Olyphant) and start to hang out together; they are heading to the secluded beach. Shortly, they meet up with his girlfriend, Gina (Kiele Sanchez).
Cliff, a screenwriter, is a bit nerdy with glasses tries to Google (product placement) , with his Black-Berry, what happened on the other island, but he has signal problem, as expected, so he cannot download the images of the alleged murderer(s). He also feels that they are being followed. The consolation is that Nick is army trained, except he has hidden survival knife, a set of compact archer (one of those you dunno what it is until assembled), and big tense eyes. His girlfriend has butcher skills to complement, and very descriptive of the process while gutting a goat that Nick just kills. So at this point, we suppose to put our bet: Kale and Cleo, or Nick and Gina, or others we have not seen yet. It could very well be paranoid imagination of Cliff with movies in his head?
This a suspense thriller, so fasten your seat-belt until it is over, will you please? Think about it, remote island, three couples + others, screenwriter,… murder.
It is great fun to watch, even with annoying commercial breaks!
